How to Verify POP3 and/or SMTP Connectivity
To verify that your internet connection is not blocking POP3:
  • Click Start-->Run.
  • In the Open box type in 'CMD' (without the quotes). Windows 98 or ME users type in 'COMMAND'.
  • Click OK
  • In the black box that pops up type in 'telnet your.mail.server 110'. For example, to check if you can connect on POP3 to the Starlite Internet mail server, you would type 'telnet mail.starliteinternet.com 110'.
  • Your computer will attempt to connect to our mail server on port 110. If it successfully connects, you will see this message displayed: "+OK X1 starliteinternet.com says hello"
  • If the message above does not display immediately, your connection is most likely filtering POP3 and you need to request that they open up POP3 to your mail server address (i.e. mail.starliteinternet.com).
  • If it successfully connects, type in 'quit' and you will be dropped back to the command prompt. Type 'exit' to close the command prompt window.
To verify that your internet connection is not blocking SMTP:
  • Click Start-->Run.
  • In the Open box type in 'CMD' (without the quotes). Windows 98 or ME users type in 'COMMAND'.
  • Click OK
  • In the black box that pops up type in 'telnet your.mail.server 25'. For example, to check if you can connect on SMTP to the Starlite Internet mail server, you would type 'telnet mail.starliteinternet.com 25'.
  • Your computer will attempt to connect to our mail server on port 25. If it successfully connects, you will see this message displayed: "220 starliteinternet.com says hello"
  • If the message above does not display immediately, your connection is most likely filtering SMTP and you need to request that they open up SMTP to your mail server address (i.e. mail.starliteinternet.com).
  • If it successfully connects, type in 'quit' and you will be dropped back to the command prompt. Type 'exit' to close the command prompt window.
